Some of you have been to Astronomi-con in Winipeg, and if you haven't it's certainly something to think about because it's a great tournament. It features unique scenarios and a high-caliber of players, lots of older guys but with a great dedication to modelling, painting, and the game. Anyway, it's going on in the third weekend of this month, and I'm going up with Aaron and AJ. This will be my fourth time, and it's really the highlight of my 40k year because every year I make a new army for it. This year it's going to be a genestealer cult, which I'm making by using the Witch Hunter Adversaries rules over a Tyrranid list. Check it out. . . total list: 1500 pts exactly. Genestealer Cult (Tyrannids with Witch Hunter Adversaries) HQ: #1) Broodlord: 70 pts (Retinue) 11 x Genestealers: 176 pts. #2) Apostate Cardinal: 115 pts. HQ Total: 361 pts. Troops: #1) 11 x Genestealers: 176 pts. #2) 11 x Genestealers: 176 pts. #3) 11 x Genestealers: 176 pts. #4) 15 x Traitors: 120 pts. Meltagun: +10 pts. #5) 10 x Traitors: 80 pts. Lascannon: +20 pts. Sniper Rifle: +5 pts. #6) 10 x Traitors: 80 pts. Lascannon: +20 pts. Sniper Rifle: +5 pts. Troops Total: 868 pts. Fast Attack: #1) 9 x Traitors: 72 pts. Meltagun: +10 pts. Rhino Transport: 50 pts. Dirge Caster: +15 pts. Smoke Launcher: +3 pts. Fast Attack Total: 150 pts. Heavy Support: #1) Carnifex: 85 pts. Barbed Strangler: +20 pts. Scything Talons: +8 pts. Enhanced Senses: +8 pts. Heavy Support Total: 121 pts. There was an earlier version that had just two squads of gstealers as troops, and then had a squad of 15 mutants with a boss w/pfist and a Lictor, but then the two squads of guardsmen with lascannons were just 6 guys apiece. Thoughts? Ideas? The idea of the list is to be fast and vicious and tournament oriented, where I want to basically finish each game on turn three, win or lose. I should mention that the Apostate Cardinal, for those that don't know him, is an IC with basic guard stats, 3 wds, and if he passes a leadership test at the start of his turn he can make all friendly units with a model within 12" (18"? I should know. . . ) fearless. Slovak |

You may have this on the Carnifex but I played an all Monsterous Creature bug army and the guy put some wargear on them that allowed them to move through cover. It was scarey to see all those guys moving right at me through buildings and such. If this is not on you Heavy, I might recommend it to keep up and just run him straight through don't go around anything! Infiltrating the broodlord and retinue is great! Enjoy the carnage! Later, |

I like it. I like it a LOT. And I'm sure it probably looks fantastic too! Makes me wish I were going. Astro is the ONLY really cool tournament in existance... even better than ours (much better actually! |

The rules are from the Witch Hunter Codex, it's a couple different HQs and a couple different Troops choices that you can add to a list to make the list a Witch Hunters Adversaries army. That's one sign of how cool the Astronomi-con is, they basically try to include any legal GW or Forge World list as an option for the tournament It's partly because I think there are a lot of great modellers and painters there and they want to open it up to whatever people want to try and partly because they don't try to micro-manage the game and second guess the 40k universe. I respect that approach. Their website is here: http://www.astronomi-con.com/ which will give you the basic facts about the tournament. |

Peter, It does sound like a really good time and a really well thought out tournament. I can't go this time, and probably can't go this fall, but I'm going to give some though to going to the June, 2008 event. Has it been 1500 points every year? That would give me something to start thinking about building for. I also think that a lot of people gripe about the product that GW puts out, and how wonky the rules can be. I also get the feeling that a lot of veterans are torqued off about how GW seems oriented towards the younger player. But, and not to derail this thread about the Genestealers, but I think that a lot of the veteran gripes may have some validity, but at the same time, we aren't 12 year old kids and don't need to have our hands held to have a good time playing 40k. We can write our own scenarios, or we can play touraments or build big game events that are geared to the older crowd, or, more specifically, us. Which is why Astro seems to be popular. And why we got good feedback on our first tournament, and hopefully will for our upcoming tournament. OK, I'm off my soapbox now. I really like the list. If you can, post some pictures of the army. |
