I don’t get it, why bring him here? Shouldn’t he be doing combat drills or going over tactical maneuvers if he’s to become some great general?

“You can train a man all you want, Colonel, but all that training is for nothing if that man doesn’t have anything to fight for.”

Fight for? What about the glory of battle? What about fighting because that’s his duty?

“Come on Colonel, you’ve been in combat before. Glory doesn’t last long when you’re standing face to face with a man-eating bug. Duty doesn’t last much longer than glory. A man needs to have something deeper to keep him going. Something personal. Something he’s actually willing to die for.”

Like his homeworld?

“Exactly.”

So you brought him halfway across the known universe just so he could see his home planet? Think of all the time you two were travelling that could have been spent training him instead!

“Colonel, this is part of his training,” he retorted, and with that Inquisitor Lord Svenson logged off the viewscreen. He rose to his feet and walked out of the communications room. Outside sat his apprentice, William, who was the subject of his recent conversation.

“Problems with the Colonel?” asked William.

“Ah, well, you know the Colonel,” replied Svenson, “He’s more concerned about getting you ready than he is getting you prepared. “

“There’s a difference?”

“Oh yes my boy, there is a difference. Don’t worry, before you’re training is complete, we’ll make sure you’re –” He didn’t get to finish his sentence because it was then that he looked outside to see a very bulky humanoid running towards the building they were in. Screams could be heard and there was a glow of fires in the distance.

“They know you’re here.”

“William, get behind me!” Svenson said as he unsheathed his sword, which shone with a holy light. The large humanoid was closing the gap between them, and as it ran closer it was clear that the humanoid was in fact a Chaos Marine garbed in blood-red armor and wielding a most fearsome axe . Gripping his sword tightly, Svenson took a defensive stance. William took his auto-pistol out of it’s holster and began to chant a prayer of protection.

The Chaos Marine swung the axe and destroyed the supposedly shatter-proof window of the Communications building. He then took a swing at the young apprentice, which was parried by Svenson. Such was the Chaos Marine’s fury towards the boy that he wasn’t focused on the Inquisitor Lord. Therefore, the parry knocked him off-balance; and, for a fleeting second, it exposed a weak spot in his armor, near the armpit of the arm holding the axe. Two shots from an auto-pistol rang out, and one bolt found it’s mark. Blackened blood flowed from the weak spot in the armor. It was enough of a wound to disable the attacker for a moment; which was all Svenson needed; he plunged the holy sword into the chest of the Chaos Marine, the blade piercing the power-armor as if it was cloth. A harsh scream erupted from the mouth of the attacker, until blood filled his throat and he was silenced. He slumped to the floor, and the room was suddenly quiet.

"We need to get off the planet now!" Svenson said.

"Oh, I thought you were going to say, 'Let's go out and fight these blokes!' like you usually do." the witty apprentice replied. Svenson didn't answer because he was already running out the door. William decided he'd follow and out the door he went.

Outside there was chaos, literally. But outside there was also a Spaceport north of the Communications Building, and that was the direction the two started running. They couldn't run very far because two more Chaos Marines impeded their progress. These two were a lot taller, a lot bulkier, and all around they gave off more of a "I'm a very very bad guy" feeling than the Marine in the Comms Building.

They didn't attack, however. In fact, the one on the right held up his hand as if to say "stop". Svenson and William stopped. The Chaos Marine on the left started speaking in a very solemn, boring tone; however, our two heroes decided it was best to pay attention to what he had to say.

"We have come for the one you call, 'William' -"

"Fuck that" Svenson interjected, and stabbed the Marine speaking in the abdomen. Then he pulled out his holy sword and the unfortunate Marine reeled in spiritual pain before his head was removed from his neck by a good clean cut.

During all this the other Marine would have helped his comrade, but he was incapacitated by William. Having been already extensivly trained in usage and control of his psychic abilities, William was what could be considered a very potent psychic threat. The Chaos Marine, who's head was full of darkness and generally-bleak feelings suddenly found himself thinking about playing with dolls, eating chocolate cake, and helping people.

The Chaos Marine died on the spot.

Don't sell yourself short Eth...  I was pleasantly surprised with a lot of your fluffiness.

For Tom, I think you've done quite well.  It's good to have a fluff fan who can actually write well - and in coherent, legible, logical sentences even!  For this group, that's pretty amazing.

Yes!  Oh how I adore tom's use of punctuation!  Thank the Gods.  It certainly doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be used.

Now... if he knows the difference between "There", "Their", and "They're"... well... I seriously might weep from joy.  :)

But more than punctuation and grammar, the content is also well thought out and pretty entertaining.

Good job. ;)

It wasn't long before our two heroes found themselves surrounded by agents of Chaos. They were near the Spaceport; but then again the Spaceport was currently on fire, and it looked as though all remaining flights were going to be delayed. The agents of Chaos varied: there were three Chaos Marines, each holding a very archaic looking Bolter; there were a few cultists who's eagerness was held back only by the glare of a extremely pissed off Chaos Lord. The Chaos Lord held a very powerful presence, not so much for Svenson but for William. It was his first time in the company of someone so powerful not only physically but psychically.  Nevertheless he remained composed, and had enough nerve to ask Svenson one important question: "Any ideas to get out of this one?"

"Yes, just one."

"Well what is it?"

"You'll find out...now." A bolt travelled through one of the cultists. A second later two more bolts found their mark in the bodies of the other cultists. The Marines went down in the same way. The Chaos Lord turned around to find the blade of an elegant power weapon shoved into his heart.

"Take that you traitorous bastard!" said a hearty voice, "the Space Wolves are here to rescue you, sir!"

The Chaos Lord wasn't going down without a fight. He swung his massive fist in the direction of the Wolf that stabbed him, but he swung at only air. The dextrous Wolf had ducked, grabbed his holstered Bolt Pistol, and stuck it into the hole created by the stabbing. He squeezed off the entire clip into the vital-organ-area of the Chaos Lord, while the other three Space Wolves accompanying our newest hero ran to make sure Svenson and William were alright.

As the Chaos Lord lay dying the Space Wolf walked up to Svenson and extended a power-armored hand. "Wolf Guard Battle Leader Einar, nice to meet you..."

"Svenson," the Inquistor Lord replied. "How were you able to get here so fast and also how did  you know we needed your help in the first place?"

"All in good time, friend, right now let's talk about why these Chaos are after this young man."

"Right now, William isn't a very powerful psyker. His abilities are above-average but his potency is lacking. However, what William does have is potential. In fact, he has so much untapped power inside him that I imagine one day he will surpass even the great Cheif Librarians. That is why the Chaos are after him, and why they haven't killed him. They can sense his potential - and they wish to use it by turning him. I am here to make sure that never happens."

"As are we," Einar replied.

"What? How did you know we were in trouble?" William asked.

"Before you ended communications with the Colonel he saw the fires in the background. You cut him off before he could warn you, and after that it was too late anyway because the Chaos ships started blocking off communications to this planet. So he found the closest ship to your location, which was our Battle Barge, quickly explained the situation to our leader, and we decided to help.
"Normally we never even consider teleportation, but since the situation demanded lightning-fast action, my Wolf Guard and I grudgingly obliged. You know the rest of the story."

"No Einar," Svenson replied, "The rest of this story is yet to be written." Einar nodded in agreement, and it was then something caught his eye.

"Get down!" he yelled, and suddenly the air was full of bullets. The Wolf Guard jumped on top of William and Svenson, using themselves as sheilds.

Einar charged towards the firing Chaos Marines. There were five of them; all armed with Bolters. Seeing the Battle Leader charging towards them, they all drew a bead on him. Einar felt sharp shocks as each bolt richocheted off his armor. It wouldn't be able to hold forever, but it would hold long enough. Unleashing a fury true to his Chapter's reputation, he grabbed the first Marine's bolter-weilding arm and ripped it clean off, then used the limb to block fire from the other four. He turned to the newly one-armed Marine, grabbed a device from his utility belt, and held it up for him to see.

"Do you happen to know what this is? Guardsmen call it a sticky bomb. Enjoy the last seconds of your life turncoat." After sticking the grenade to the Chaos Marine's chest, Einar grabbed him; then in one motion he both picked him off the ground and hurled him towards the remaining four.

The group ran on, following Einar. He was trying desperately to get through to the Battle Barge.

"Zealous Warrior do you read? I repeat Zealous Warrior do you read?"

"...This is Captain Forsa of the Zealous Warrior, we read you Sir."

"Are you still in range Captain?"

"No sir, the Chaos ships got wind of us on our way towards the planet...we're currently engaging them. Even if we were still in range, we have diverted all unnecessary power to combat systems and to the engines."

"Shit, alright Captain, alert me when you come back into Warp range."

"About that Sir, there's something else."

"Go ahead."

"Its one of us against seven of them. We're firing with all we have but it's not going to be enough. I may have to use the Cayman Maneuver..."

"What about my Wolves?!"

"Already in their Thunderhawks and heading towards the planet. Except for those on the bridge, my crew has abandoned ship as well. I'm going to make sure that these bastards aren't going to be leaving the planet either. May the Emperor protect you; and if you're ever on Yvunter, please try to find my family and tell them I didn't die a coward."

The communications ended and Einar paused. "Whats wrong?" asked Svenson.

"We don't have any way off this planet. My Company of Wolves is coming with their Thunderhawks, but there's not a civilized planet anywhere near this one. We're just going to have to dig in and fight."

Meanwhile near the planet the Zealous Warrior was going up against six Chaos Destroyers and one mighty flagship. "Is the reactor ready?" Captain Forsa asked the Cheif Engineer.

"Yes sir."

"Good...Navigator, are you ready as well?" The Navigator nodded silently, already preparing himself for the very complicated jump.

"And the Thunderhawks? Are they out of range?"

"Yes sir." The ship's Radar Technician replied.

"Men, we are not about to let these Traitors destroy this bloody ship without taking a few of the bastards with us. We may be outnumbered and we may be outgunned but we have something they don't have: The Emporer on our side. With him we cannot fail, and so I ask you, my Officers, my friends, my brothers...are you prepared to die!?"

The entire bridge of officers stood and saluted Captain Forsa.

"Alright then, to the flagship...let's dance motherfuckers!"

The captain of the Chaos flagship watched as the puny Imperial Battle Barge disappeared from sight. "Heh...cowards, I told you they would turn tail. Men, this planet is ours!"

Inside the Warp, the Captain Forsa issued his two final orders, and the two most important orders of his career, and of the ensuing campaign. "Take her out of the Warp when we are in position, and three seconds before we come out of the Warp, dump the fuel into the reactor..."

The Zealous Warrior materialized back into realspace. It also materialized right into the Chaos flagship. It took two seconds for the fuel to mix in the reactor and one second for the resulting catacalysmic explosion to ignite. For that reason, as the Zealous Warrior materialized into the flagship, it also exploded with the force of a small star.

Every Chaos ship was lost.
