It really isn't much of a stretch to imagine GW completely breaking the game in favor of one codex order to meet their sales figures, and that's a fucking shame.
2.) I played against a mechanized Tau army at Astro at the end of June (he won) amidst seven other (good) games that weekend, and as I stood across the table from this guy I thought to myself "This army does everything that he wants it to, with no effort at all." I mean, if he wanted to blow up my tank, boom, from clear across the table my tank exploded. No need to get lucky, no need to roll especially well, no need to be brave and take a chance at all really. If he wanted to fly a bunch of guys into my backfield and shoot me, no problem. They just appear there, magically, and somehow the rules are written that I can't shoot him back.
But he didn't have to do anything. He didn't risk anything, he didn't gamble anything, in fact he got pissy when line of sight went against him and he couldn't see my Hellhound to blow it up the first turn it came in. Don't worry, he blew it up the second turn, and then he cheered like it was some sort of accomplishment, with a flying multi-shot BS4 Strength 10 AP1 cannon that you can only ever get a glancing hit against.
At some point during the game I thought to myself "I play this as a game, one that lets me attach unrealistic emotional and narrative values to little plastic pieces and gamble on selecting the right sacrifices to achieve an arbitrary outcome". That's why it's called a game. But when it stops fitting that description and doesn't require any real challenge from one of the players, I'm not interested in playing. I play maybe 10 or 12 non-tournament games a year, and so I decided then and there that none of them will be against opponents that play mechanized Tau. Or Necrons. Or any other army that's designed to stand out of range or in some loophole in the rules that allows them to pick me apart without committing anything to the experience. I'm not interested in playing those armies, because I'm not interested in gaming with people that don't enjoy the challenge of the event.
Maybe the same will be true for terminators with 2+ saves/ 3+ invunerables, free support weapons, and scouts that make sure (again, effortlessly) that my Basilisk only gets one shot per game. Or deep-striking armies that just move/herd your troops into tight, easy to flamer knots when they land right on them (again, at what risk?). But honestly I hope it isn't the case, because the army being described I have no interest in playing against.
We're all fucking middle-aged here. We've all got limited time to play, and better ways to spend it than get kicked around the board by some smug prick who doesn't even have to get involved in the game to do it.
And fuck smiley faces.
Great post Major.
I notice the Mech Tau Snit and honestly, I think the Mech Tau bubble will burst a little in 5th ed(and desveredly so). Vehicular cover saves and the loss of skimmer glancing rules make skimmer tanks operate MUCH more like regular tanks.(though FYI, the STR10 gun is NOT multi shot). Combine that with skimmers blocking LOS (semi killing the vehicle wall protection Fish of fury provides from assault). Sadly, just given the number of Mech tau lists that sprouted after the last lists, it's hard tom refute that there was some trouble with a mechanized Skimmer force (beit Eldar or Tau). at the risk of sounding propogandic, I think 5th ed will turn these guys around somewhat, though this is not to say that a quick moving rapid response force won't still bring a kind of difficulty to the game and some angry opponents, but the same kind that will present that same force witht he overmatched combat strength a non-mech force should present it.

I'm confused about something.
The rumor says that ten man tac squads get a flamer and a heavy bolter, missle launcher or multimelta for free.
Things I wonder about
1.) is the vet sgt included (Codex DA style) or is it an upgrade?
2.) where does the melta or plasmagun fit into this equation?
3.) Likewise with the lascannon or plasmacannon?
4.) Do squads less than ten get the option of a special weapon, but you need ten to get the free stuff and a heavy weapon? Can a five man squad buy a flamer, meltagun or plasmagun?
5.)Can razorback be purchased for 10 man squads?
6.)If there is a 10 man requirement for tac marines to get a special and/or a heavy weapon, will scouts become the backbone of marine lists/troop choices?
hmmmm.......

Maybe what GW is planning to do is give Genestealers a 2+ / 3+ Invunerable.
Reset the clock to Space Hulk.

I can only speculate, but
1.) is the vet sgt included (Codex DA style) or is it an upgrade?
Probably an upgrade, as it always has been for marines (excepting DA, of course)
2.) where does the melta or plasmagun fit into this equation?
Probably an upgrade to the flamer
3.) Likewise with the lascannon or plasmacannon?
Ditto
4.) Do squads less than ten get the option of a special weapon, but you need ten to get the free stuff and a heavy weapon? Can a five man squad buy a flamer, meltagun or plasmagun?
My five man squads can have a special weapon and Vet, but no heavy weapon. I would anticipate the same if combat squads are becoming the norm. I would think the flamer is free at a five man squad size. (probably included in a box set soon to be released)
5.)Can razorback be purchased for 10 man squads?
Neva!
6.)If there is a 10 man requirement for tac marines to get a special and/or a heavy weapon, will scouts become the backbone of marine lists/troop choices?
Not if they become Str/T 3
hmmmm.......

Sounds to me like you've just created the E-Company Scavenger Hunt List for this year's Historicon!

Last person to be photographed with the previously mentioned stereotypical gamer dorks must by a round of drinks at the bar.
I'm in, just define "Air Force haircut"? Is that a short haircut...longer than a buzz cut? Longer than an Army or Marine haircut? Can we win by being photographed, ourselves, sporting an Air Force haicut, black strap holding his glasses on, and a diet pepsi in hand. (Wolf Man and Major, just stick your stomaches out for the picture)
