yes, kids, that's right, three armor 13 defilers, few mobs of mutants with 9 power fiest attacks a piece, and a shiney demon prince to scare the flank and bam! we've got a nasty peice of work that managed to phase the necrons.
while I'm likin the three defiler line up, I think it may actually be better in the lost and damned list than in a chaos list. here they seem like a MUCH bigger threat than the (basically) ork mobs with no choppas and fewer attacks milling around at their feet. this allows those mobs to get a free move or three, which lets them get a charge off, and once their in hand to hand they're basically gonna win.
I loves it.
in fact, I may love it even more than three leman russ (heresy!) since
A.) at armor 13 people think they've got a better chance of killin it, and so will devote more fire to it,
B.) as a walker it can tie up units in hand to hand, won't immobilize in diff terrain, and
C.) ignores all those pesky 'shaken' and 'stunned' results
(and for 120 more points, they can all repair themselves on a 4+ !!)

I like your style, Heretic.
I see two problems with running three Defilers, however:
1.) 450 points (plus), and-
2.) You then have no slot for a Basilisk.
The cost thing- I don't know, was it worth it? That's pretty expensive for an army >2000 points. . . Using all HS three slots, on the other hand, is all about getting the job done however you can and thus is a matter of opinion. I believe that the Basilisk is The Queen of the Jungle.
Having watched you play that army at the mini-tournament though I was plenty impressed- I'm curious, what would you guess was the ratio of turns that you fired the battle cannon vs. turns that you used the secondary armnaments?
Also, did you buy indirect for any of them during the 4 games? And how many did you lose each game?
My MVP for the weekend was definitely the humble chaos hound.

I lost one (of two) the first game,
two (of two) the second (against tau...doh)
one (of two) the third game
and zero (of three) the last one (though two of them were immobilized and had no battle cannons...this is why I wanted to spring the extra points for the repairing <shrug>
in truth, I'm not a proponent of blindly firing the battle cannon every turn. in this list, the defilers, while mostly anti horde, were one of my only tank hunters... in that role, the reaper auto cannon is a must for anything armor 12 and below, I prolly fired that more often than I fired the battle cannon, if only for the twin linking.
not to say that you SHOULDN'T fire the battle cannon. in my last game one of my few battle cannon shots was turn one and killed 9 of ten immortals. this blow definatly made a point to kevin, as he spent the rest of the game devoting huge amounts of fire to them, even though as a whole, the mutants were much more the reason for his loss.
having played the battle cannon in a number of lists, I've decided that against a horde (or marines that you can't otherwise kill easily) it is extremely effective as a weapon of killing models. in almost all cases, though, even those where the gun is not as effective, the *threat* of the gun is enough to suck fire from almost all foes-and this is the effect that I was seeking with my defilers. yes, at 1850, devoting a quarter or more of your points to three vehicles is costly, but the effect is that for two or more turns, until the defilers are, indeed, dead, three large (and dangerous with 11 powerfist attacks on the charge) mutant squads and a demon prince are dashing accross the table unmolested. it really is the case of the lesser of evils, because while the mutants will win me the game, if you IGNORE the defilers, they'll play havok with your army the entire game.
