oki, so. Lets get some ideas going for Teams A & B for adepticon 2009.
so far Pete submitted the all mounted gaurd list. I'm going to sit around here for a little bit and try to point some lists for it (1 hq, 1 elite, 1-3 troop, 1 fast, and 1 hvy.. with one more of each of the specials per team) and we'll see what we can all fit. Should it be naked chimeras? or tricked out? I'll try both.
on a competative level, does anyone have basic thoughts?
another important thought: The competative army, in my opinion, should still be fun to play. From personal experience, playing a monolith heavy necron team would be dynamic and amusing, in addition to being competative. However, if no one has the desire to play the list, it should go by the way side, no matter how good it is.
Imma point some stuffs out. back in a bit

ok. All mech Gaurd. I know that people wanted chimeras in favor of all else, but I wrote up four lists just to give people a feel for how much play we have with toys. Take these lists and edit em up... this is just my initial write up, and needs some 'outside the box' thoughts. Here goes.
Traits:
Mechanized
Spec Weapons
Grenadiers
Close order (its free, why not?)
-one open slot-
Army Group A: (totals to left of entry, and they include cost of the transport)
(185) Junior officer (40 pts) pwr wpn (5) 2 melta guns (20) 2 flamers (12)
(108) Chimera (70) multi las (10) hvy bolter (5) xtra armor (5)
track gaurds (10) diff terrain (5) smoke (3)
(219) 8 Storm troopers (80 pts) 2 melta guns (20) vet sgt (6) pwr wpn (5)

(50) Sentinal (35 pts) Autocannon (15)
(50) Sentinal (35 pts) Autocannon (15)
Total: 994 (could add searchlights to these chimeras, or a pwr wpn to one of the officers)

Army Group D:
(180) Junior officer (40 pts) 2 melta (20) 2 flamer (12)
(108) Chimera (70) multi las (10) hvy bolter (5) xtra armor (5)

(140) Bassilisk (100 pts) Armored top (20) xtra amor (5) track gaurds (10)
diff terrain (5)
Total: 996 (one of the bassi's could use smoke, I would think)
This is basically 2 different takes on a 1000 pt mechanized army (A & B), and then a variation on each (C & D).
thoughts?

I'd put heavy stubbers on all of the chimeras if possible.
I'd also try to get another hellhound in there.

Actually, I DO have a fully painted Hellhound, so I guess I'd probably want to take that. Plus, it still fits with the "run and gun" style of play I'd be looking for.
Plus, the tank isn't so done that it has detailed markings on it. So just one afternoon's detail work would polish it up to fit with whatever scheme we need.
But still, I don't want to get overly involved in another Adepticon that is just going to dissapoint. This is Adepticon's last chance for me. I would plan on doing exactly what I said earlier. Move all vehicles 12 inches first turn straight at the enemy and blow smoke. Turn 2, move 12, dump troops and fire OR dump all troops, move everything 6 inches, shoot everything at anything. Play not to win or lose but to cause as much devastation as possible and go out with a BANG!
I've played to win this tourney twice before, and was sorely disappointed in the opponents, judging, timetable and the rest.
I think the only way I'd have fun is if I showed up under a resurrected BattleTech team name (Group W) and walk into that place jumping up and down yelling "Kill... KILL!!! I wanna eat dead, burnt bodies!!! KILLLLL!!!! KILLLL!!!!! I want blood and guts in mah teeth!!! KILLLL!!!! KILLLLL!!!!!"
...otherwise maybe somebody else should just take my spot.

well, the gaurd list, as stands, is the list that falls under the 'non competative' catagory. That being said, I was working off the principal that we would organize the whole army out of existingly owned models, paint schemes be damned. we'll have a bullshit line about the 'last remains of a coalition force' that 'broke out of certain doom' and 'have been wandering without clear orders since'. then there's no painting or modeling required, just assembling, and stealing some hotels trays for display boards.
I'm all about a competative list as well, one which we build up from scratch, have coordinating paint schemes and a back-story to match. I love this idea, and will contribute in any way necessary, but that army/team is more of a commitment. If as a group we'd rather just put up two or three teams of models that we all already own because that sounds more fun, then by all means, lets do it.
anyone else have list ideas?
TW- couldn't fit 48-60 points of stubbers into any of the lists, just wasn't doin. and since the chimera's are really just engines to get the gaurd into shooting range, the stubbers get dropped before I'm willing to lose 6 storm troopers. a min max list might work, but I'd have to see it on paper/in action before comparisons as to which is better could be made

if you get an imobilization result on the table, you ignore it on a 4+

I find that if you do that, your chimeras are then a more static fire support unit than otherwise. If the purpose of the unit is to bum rush your guard across the table so they can melta gun shit, then I prefer the surviverability of the track guards.
personally I prefer both. but in the spirit of the theme of the army (as much as it is themed) I would stick with the track guards. who said we were gonna win, anyways?

No way. Track Guards is the way to go. Do you know how hard it is to stop or kill a smoked transport??? An immobilization is a victory in that scenario. Now imagine you work to get that immobilization, and all of a sudden your opponent rolls a die and ignores the result. That's tough!
Basically, track Guards, extra armor and smoke make the Chimera nigh unstoppable for one turn.

Take it from a guy who has a hard time stopping transports. Track guards are friggin demoralizing.
I'd still be willing to do a terrain base for this army if you guys are going to paint it up. If not, use the room service trays. Works well and you don't have to bring it home with you.
