Wow.  What a cool convention.  This was my first one and I am DEFINITELY going back next year.  I think the most important thing I learned was that I must take Friday off of work next time.  Being there for just one day (Saturday) wasn't nearly enough time to take it all in.

The Flames of War National Tournament was simply awesome.  I could not believe the terrain they had available.  Each board was beautiful.  And there was somewhere in the neighborgood of 50 or more tables!

The convention was much larger than I had suspected, and my only beef with the whole event was that it was VERY confusing finding your way around.  The hotel/convention-conference center is quite large and the location of all the different rooms/halls/exhibits seemed rather maze-like.  I didn't realise that I had completely missed the Warstore, Gale Force 9, and the rest of the dealers until after I had left the show.  I thought that the Flea Market area was the dealer area! :?

I got to play a fun game of mutiny aboard a Fantasy Pirate Ship where my pirate mage slayed a multi-tentacled, serpentine sea-beast before being bashed in the skull.  Then Peter and I both took part in a Civil War Naval battle complete with Confederate Iron Sides, Union Monitors, and a host of wooden war ships.  We got the crap shot out of us, but it was a pretty cool game.  The models were fantastic.

Sharing a couple beers with E-Company in the on-site bar at the end of the night was another highlight.  Being able to smoke indoors, in a hotel bar, is something of a luxury for me these days. ;)

I had a great time, met some cool gamers (they tend to be older there - which was cool) and saw some AMAZING looking games, terrain, models.

Unfortunately, the batteries in my camera were dead upon arrival. :(

Awesome con.

I was there three days, played a ton of games mostly 25mm WW2. Best terrain and most interesting and varied miniature games I've ever seen. Great dealer area (yes, I bought a Baneblade). Cool old guys. Open beers in the game areas, no problem.

Probably 3,000 people-? That's a guess, less on thursday and friday. Lots of massive games, 10+ players doing civil war or napoleanics or hittites or whatever. GREAT flea market area, get this- I bought a box of thirty (30!) epic titans and the epic rules, counters, and dice for 20 bucks. I got seven 1/35 scale models for 25 bucks.

Tons of board games, good sportsmanship, funny hats, no one dressed as a Klingon with rolls of fat hanging over their swimsuit trunks and a broom that's supposed to be a halbred, but really that's okay with me.

I know there's a lot of love for Gencon on this site, and I don't mean to knock it, but if I didn't already have hotel resos with Aaron in Indy I'd take a pass, Historicon was $25 for a Thurs-Sun badge, the food was actually good and western Pennsylvania cheap, tap beer was $3 in the gaming area, and games from all over the spectrum. Hotels less than $60 a night. I played this awesome 25mm Sky Galleon of Mars game.

2008 will most likely be my last trip to gencon. It's just not worth the money, since I don't play Yu-Gi-Oh.

Well I, for one, am glad that you will be at Gen Con this year.  We'll have to make it extra special since it may be your last!  I agree that it is expensive, and nearly everyone..... <thought better of this and will move the rant to the Gen Con board ;)>

Historicon WAS pretty darn kick-ass though!  I was VERY impressed.  I just need to bring batteries next time.  Damn! :(

Historicon is great.  Good seeing fellow E-Company Saturday night.  Quality of gamers is very high.  Prices very reasonable.  Cheap beer, carry outs 'till 2AM, cigs, less than $5.00, you can smoke in bars, you can drink in gaming areas, exhibit area outstanding.  Some really great deals in the flea market.  Great all-you-can-eat Amish Buffets...hell, I even got laid!

heavyleadbelly would absolutely LOVE IT!

The FoW tournament was incredible.  Seriously, I've never seen such an awesome display of terrain and models in a tournament setting.

And there was a suh-weeeeet game of 25mm modern military Iraqi war stuff in that same hall as well.  The table had to be at least 12 feet long and you lead a group of allied forces (American and British) from one short end to the other.  It looked great.

It'd be great for a bunch of us to get a room at the Lancaster Host and just game our brains out for the whole weekend next year.

Yeah, I have always wanted to go to Historicon, so maybe I will put it on the agenda for next year.  I must say that it is probably the best place to see FOW competition, as it is the national tourny.

But thats not what I would be interested in, I love playing a lot of new games, ala ACW, Napoleonics, etc.  Also buying stuff......
