Hey guys any recommendations for primers? The citadel stuff is like 10/15 bucks a can, and I am sure there is a cheaper alternative especially when looking at the long haul. I am painting plastic armies right now (black reach set). Also, if you guys do have any recommendations, what about the metal figures as well. (I know sometimes there are different primers for different surfaces). I did some research online as well, but since you guys are local it is easier to walk into a store and pick up the same stuff you guys are using.

Automotive primer works just as well.  Black or grey.

I've also had good success with Krylon brand primers, just be careful not to spray too heavy or you will obscure detail.  Any of those are significantly cheaper than GW brands.

I tend to undercoat and prime using a cheap black acrylic paint like Apple Barrel or Delta Cermacoat (you can get both at Wal-Mart or Michael's craft stores).  I typically do that because it isn't as easy to spray in the winter if you live in a place where the temperatures can affect the paint.

I have also used inks as an alternative to primers,This especially works if you looking at a lot of drybrush coats on smaller metal models with some detail.Krylon works better on the plastic mins though.

I've been wondering about this too.  I'm ready to start painting, but the GW store opening here in Rockford hasn't happened yet.  However, the local hobby shops have quit ordering (some time ago) GW products.  So no luck finding the can of "Chaos Black" primer I was looking for.

Now for the real question.  Is there really any difference between GW primer and the primer I can but for cars, or at the HW store?  I'm worried that the HW store primer will be "thicker" or something and cover detail, etc.

Am I worried about nothing?

I just used Rustoleum bare-metal white primer on some black-reach models.

It was the best primer I've used yet.  The best thing to remember is: if it says "recoat in one hour" make sure you wait one hour.

Frankly, I don't buy any of my paint at hobby stores.  I don't blame people who do, it is just you don't get very much acrylic paint for what they charge for a single pot.

I use the cheapest flat colored spraypaint that I can find to prime, but model almost exclusively with plastics.

I find the GW primers coats too heavily and inconsistently, obscuring detail.

Is there a good Rustoleum black primer?

Or rather any specific suggestions for one?

Ask for Rustoleum Black Bare-Metal Primer, I guess.

I've used X-O Rust red metal primer as a base coat for almost all of my ork vehicles, which end up looking red-orange rusty color.

As well, I've used Krylon Black Fusion Primer, it is made specifically for plastics, and had a nice surface to paint on. But it was just as expensive as the Rustoleum bare-metal.

If there was one thing I noticed about the Rustoleum Bare-Metal Primer that I used (I used white), is that the final coat had a very fine "grit" to it. Some tooth. I'm not saying that it distorted form at *all*, just that it had a really nice "primer tooth." I've used alot of different primers on different surfaces, and this primer kinda "grabbed" the paint. Something I like to see.

I was pleasantly surprised. I should also mention that I primed them in three coats to get all the sides, and waited over an hour between each coat.

I have a skull white GW primer and I has been working great. Particularly in concert with the new washes. My daemons are coming along nicely and I just finished my bloodletters. Dunno if that helps.

Well after i build a space marine army, nids probably will be next. Like 12 years ago when I first found out about 40k, the local gaming store at that time(Chadwicks in Kenosha) hosted tourneys and I remember this one guys tyranid army just destroyed everyone! I am a big aliens fan so marines and bugs are probably going to be my two favorites. You hit the nail on the head there!
