It's no secret that Wolfie is building an Ork army, and when we started talking about getting together to playtest sometime in the near future we struck upon a novel idea- an escalation league!
So with preliminary talks are underway to establish an escalation league out here in E Company territory it's time to build a new army. Fuckin' A, just like White-Fucking-Dwarf!! And this being a brand new project, the sky is the limit. I could build anything within limits (see below).
So what the hell, I leave it to you my brothers. What should I build?
A little about me-
As most of you know, I am a Guard player through and through. I love the guard. In fact, I've got a bit of a guard problem, as in about 750 guardsmen (all extensively converted) and more than 50 vehicles. But really the heart of 40k for me is converting and painting. I am what you'd call a theme oriented hobbyist. I also built a big Lost and Damned army, which GW pulled the rug out from under, and I built a 2750 point genestealer cult for that tournament in England last fall. But the underlying energy behind my armies has been all about a comprehensive vision of a gritty 41st century with lots of scratch-building. I'm not so much about competitive lists as I am about concept.
A little about my new armys limitations-
I have an extensive bitz collection to draw from, and plan on utilizing that and improvisation to curtail the expected budget for a 40k project. In fact, I'm setting a limit for myself of $150 for a 2500 point army which is going to be tough but totally punk rock if I can make it happen.
So here's what I have going for my possible army selections-
-Space Orks: I have an Ork Codex, bitz enough for about 50 boyz, 3 metal armored ork bodies, and I think 2 or 3 ork dreadnaughts (which who cares, I can build an ork dreadnaught out of a tunafish can and some woodscrews). Also lots of guard vehicles to loot, bitz in general, etc.. If I build Orks I'm thinking that I might even come in under budget, because really all I need are some more boyz and grots and everything else I could smash together. THEME- I think it would be fun to build and paint an army of albino orks.
-Space Marines: No Codex, so that's going to be a hit to my budget initially. I probabl have bitz enought to put together 40 power armored bodies. 2 rhinos built and ready to play. 1 rhino kit (missing some parts), 1 land raider kit (again missing some parts), and a bunch of Epic Titans that would make cool terminators. Need to buy some vehicles and/or guys to fill the ranks to 2500 points, but the new codex would be fun to play with. THEME- I think designing my own chapter would be fun. Slightly off-astartes, like a band of ronin samurai, a death cult. Maybe a mixture of chapters fighting together Oil-streaked veterans.
-Chaos Space Marines: As above for bitz, but I already hace the CSM Codex. Also, I have a smattering of CSM from my LATD army, a bunch of AspChamps with pfists, a couple of crazy oblits, a handful (25? maybe) of Undivided dudes with various weapons ready to play, or convert, whatever. THEME- I would pick a god and make an army around that. Fun. Demons for sure, greater, lesser, princes. Hardcore Chaos, chains and fire and vomitting blood.
-Nids: I have 75 genestealers and an old school 2nd edition Brood Lord painted to an excellent standard that I could base this army around. Also a Carnifex converted from a WH Fantasy giant, themed to go with the genestealer cult but a little tall with true line of sight. I have a Tyrannid Codex. Everything else would have to be purchased/ bashed. THEME- I like the nids, and I think it would be fun to make a heavily, heavily mutated army that is all based on genestealers at various stages of development- i.e., termagants and other scuttly hoard things are partly human, maybe like the zombies in I Am Legend -? Zoanthropes etc. are more highly evolved genestealers. Also- I'd like to do a lot of work on modelling bases, and this would be the army to do it with.
Daemons- No Codex, but that would be among the only costs of this army. Buy a bunch of round bases and make the entire army an art project. Pipe cleaners, drywall spackle, cotton balls, and dental floss. Question- is this a fun list to play? THEME- An exploration of the warp, a strange vision.
-Other: You tell me.
Ideas, gentlemen? Weigh in here.

If it is conversions and stuff, and you went with Space Marines, I think you should check out the Mentor Legion. By the fluff, they were supposed to have all of the test and prototype versions of weaponry and armor and stuff. You could really convert a lot of stuff and still call it Marine.
The last adepticon I was at, I played a SM army that was extensivlely converted, really cool stuff. The problem was in trying to tell exactly what was in the squads that I was facing off against. Just so long as those Plasma Guns look like Plasma guns, that's the hardest thing to deal with going from modelling to actual gameplay. That was, in my mind, the downfall of the army I faced off against. The other downfall was when my Cannoness put a couple wounds on his uber killer Librarian and he couldn't do the same because of some acts of faith. Ha. They won that round I think, but I got to piss in their hat a bit before we left.
I also liked the idea of a unit of Marines that were cobbled together remnants of some big battle. Each could be converted and painted up under different chapter colors. That's a project I've been kicking around on my own for a while as well. My take on them would be that they were really standard, but heavily equipped, lots of extra pouches and grenades and knives and stuff, showing how they were the sole survivor of a landing before they got snatched up, reassigned to a provisional unit. Just the look of an Imperial Fist next to a Aurora Chapter marine would be fun. Plus I could have the fun of trying to come up with good looking schemes that were really ornate, but not machine painting 20 more Black Templars in the process.

| I think you should do chaos marines because the converting options (posessed, spawn, deamons) woulld be incredible. Plus you could probably use some of the guard vehicles and convert them into vindicators and whatnot.

I actually think you could build on this with a army of the red corsairs. Some of the older fluff said that went marine units would go rouge, but not all the way to chaos, they would frequently join up with the corsairs.
It's one of those armies I've thought about from time to time.
Otherwise you could tunr the table on Steve-E and build a gothic looking spacewolves army. The bits package I'm putting together for you would go a long way towards doing that.

Did you know the Ork army I'm making has black skin? Black orks Vs. white orks... race war! race war! haha.
I can't really pick a single idea from your list.... they all look good! CT's mention of the Red Corsairs sounded pretty interesting. Actually, a rogue marine list would be pretty cool. I'd love to see what you could do with that. Also, you could spend just $60 on the Black Reach box set and get a good start on marines right there (then sell or trade me the Ork stuff - haha! my secret plan has come to light!)

Notice the imperials are saying SM and the non imperials are sayingother things hehe we are engrained for or against the emporor. Just pointing that out as interesting.
Break it down you love converting it is your favorite thing out of the 4 options from best to worse conversions IMO are Orcs, Nids, Chaos then Space Marines. You might be able to bump up Chaos to 2nd but from how you describe the nids I am beting nids would be better and more challenging than Chaos. Sorry but SM still look like SM when converted.
Building on a budget you should go with Orcs or Space marines the black reach box set is just the best value for your money. Spend $120 you would get 2 boxes of Black reach stuff and sell off the marines @ $60 and now you still have $90 for your budget. You could scratch build trucks easily convert the choppers to be bikes if you want come up with something for battle wagons etc you are set.
Chaos demons I would not play I bought them to be a fun army themed etc but they are not fun you win easily or you just loose everything deepstrikes so style and tactics get throuwn out more than you realy want you don't realize how fun tactics are until your army just does not have any because they all pop onto the board.
Nids: You all ready have nids even though it is a genestealer cult you have it so do you want a new army or do you want to expand your existing army? If you really want a new army Nids are out (sorry).
Chaos: Ovisouly I love Chaos as noted by the amount of my purchases keep increasing and I love the new Codex. It really depends on if you can go from 100 units on the board for 1500 points to 30-45 and would you be happy with that. I think you would prefer the 100 guys rushing to win vs a smaller elite army.
Space Marines: same as chaos smaller elite cool codex but pretty stringent in the conversion side of things not that cool conversions are not avaiable but as I said they are cool looking space marines not robots that are supose to be something else (one of my favorite units you made)
Orcs = Cheap and endless and I mean endless conversions you could do you and a box of plasticard, dry wall sanding screen and some tuna cans as you put it SWEET! I just want to see a tuna battle wagon monster truck looking thing.
Space Marines = Cheap because of the black reach box but the conversions would have to look like SM when you are done. Could be hard conversions because they would need to look like you purchased them from GW if done well.
Chaos: Getting pricey and not and much conversion up side as your Nid idea and Orcs. Although I have some Chaos stuff I can send you to help out. I converted 6 terminators to oblits.
Nids: Lower prince you have a bunch if you want to expand your army this is the direction to go. Great conversion idea and would be realativley inexpensive.
Demons: I don't recommend it unless you just want to scratch build demons which in that case I would recommend Chaos.
Just the way I see it no matter what you pick I can't wait to see how awsome it is going to look!

I've got it. This is it. The idea of all ideas.

..... SQUATS!
Let's face it. You are the only person in our group (besides maybe Aaron) who could actually do this. Build Squats and use the new Marine Codex for their army list. It's perfect. The new marine 'dex has conversion beamers again, right? (which I thought was an old Squat weapon anyway), and if you take a Tech marine (Tech Squat) with the thunder-fire cannon (again, wasn't that a Squat weapon?) you are getting pretty themed-up. Use the rules for Vulkan - master crafted meltas and thunder hammers - for your Squat Warmaster and you are Squats through and through.
Get CT to send you some old Rogue Trader Squat info. Dacio has all my old epic Squat rules and info. It's the 40k conversion project of a life-time!
I think the only thing you have to worry about (rules-wise) would be their troops choice, as squats didn't have power-armored troopers. But they did have terminator equivalents, they had bikes, they had honor guard - veteran type units (which you could sub Stern Guard and command squads for), they had heavy weapons teams (use devastator squad rules - with the 3+ save, i don't care). Fuck it, use tactical marines as troops. Squats are super tech savvy. They each have a personal force field which counts as a 3+ armor save. The Scouts? Those are just regular Squats, no personal force field.
Now, the only real hurdle (besides the enormous task of conversion... step up to the plate, man!) would be budget. And it seems impossible at first. But listen. Have you ever seen a Squat Dreadnought??? Me neither! Nobody has! Tuna can dreadnought, here we come! Ever seen a Squat heavy transport (Landraider variation - which you have parts for, yes???) Me neither!!! Nobody has!!! Build away! Get some fantasy dwarves from GW Fantasy and convert away! I could probably even give you extra bolters and stuff if you needed it (it's a little known secret that I have been hording a massive marine bitz box for many many years). I'd totally be willing to part with all the little common stuff.
and... Oh My God! This is too perfect. Gyrocopters. Squats had Gyrocopters. Look at the Deff Koptas you get in the Black Reach box. Convert 'em a little. Boom. You've got gyrocopters and you use Landspeeder rules for them. Boo-ya!!!
What else do you get in the Black Reach set? Plastic Terminators. cut them at the knees - badda bing badda boom - squat termies.
And the best part? It's your own freakin' race, man! Endless fluff opportunities there! What's up with the Squats? It's completely up to YOU!
AND! (in case you need more) Squats Vs. Orks? AWESOME fun to play!!!

I like the Squats idea best- but I think the conversion hurtle is a high one- Fantasy Dwarves don't chop up well and are ugly and uninviting-
My real vote would go for Chaos Marines-
using the deamon slots for teleporting hordes of men shot from the Empyrean -
I am partial to Black Legion or Alpha- but if you want to go after one of the Chaos Entities I would go with Emperor's Children-
The sonic weapons could easily be conversions and they use lots of slaves which could be conscripts in deamon slots- and the characters are fun- Lucious would be great to model- and I think their special weapons are very interesting and have more character than plague or blood or magik stuff...
Would not do them pink though-
plus it would be a fitting epitaph to Hunslow...

Here's why you shouldn't do the squats.
They suck.
If they were a popular or enjoyable army, GW would have stuck with them.
Don't become that bearded, sandal wearing, pasty skinned, potchtuli smelling freak that formerly resided in the basement of Napoleons that disdains everything that GW does simply because GW made their army (you could also replace Squats with Zoats or Beastmen) obsolete. Don't be that guy that insists on reliving the memories of 18 some years ago when they proudly marched dwarfs to war for the Imperium, won one game, and then quit when GW released 2nd edition. Don't be the guy that gripes that they don't have true manstopper rounds for shotguns, or splinter rifles for Space Marines.
It's going to end up looking like midget Space Marines.
Don't do it.
Get creative, I like the Emperor's Children suggestion as well. And pink isn't bad either. Conversion wise, I think you might also have some fun with a Radical Witch Hunters or Deamon Hunters Army as well.

If done poorly, yes. It would be a tough project. But if done well, it would be the single greatest army in all of D-Company.
It would take awesome modelling skill. And I, for one, believe that Peter has that skill.
Nobody even remembers the Squats. When did you get into 40k Tiberius? 3rd Ed.? You don't know Squat! (hehehe) The Squats were awesome in Epic! One of the most fun armies to play. No one is going to be "reliving" the Squats of 18 years ago. Model them right - make the termies from those Epic Titans you have Pete, and say that they are robots built by the stout but nearly extinct race of Squats.
Shit. Call them Demiurg like GW did when they threw them a bone in Battlefleet Gothic. They don't need to be the Squats of old. Obviously they are lost to the Imperium. Perhaps the Imperium of man turned a cold shoulder to the Squats during some catastrophic 'nid invasion or something, and now the free people Demiurgia have weathered that storm on their own and risen up to once again cut a little piece of the Galaxy out for themselves! Yeah!
Take that modelling/painting skill and Push it to The Limit!

Beastman Army under IA6-
have not seen it, but sounds fun- and I think you can use Renegade squads to fill out the list until you grow them-
and you can bring some version of Khorne Beserkers to have some Marine type conversion punch-
You know you want to....

Do orks.
There are many reasons why.
You know you want to. They are the true "scratch build" army which appeals to you.
The army list begs, BEGS I tell you, to put as many swingin' dicks on the battlefield as possible. And unlike guard, the more you put on the board the better your army actually fights.
Different "forms" of similar equipment not only works, it ENHANCES the army's look. A homogenous ork army is kinda boring.
You can include robots. Cybernetic orks exist.
You can convert individual models with freedom and whim without changing their particular stats. Example: replace an ork's hand with a knife blade. No difference or notice. Replace a marine's hand with a knife blade: You better have a good story for that one. Replace an ork's head with a headlamp. No difference or notice. Replace a marine's head with a headlamp: You'd better enjoy sitting at the bar alone.
They're renegades. They're comrades. They're football hooligans. They smoke, drink, piss, and yell. They tear apart technology with axes, not servo-harnesses. They aren't evil per se, but they certainly aren't all goody-two-shoes.
You don't need a reason to fight anyone, except that you are an ork, and want to fight someone.
You carry your miniatures back to your case by the handful.
If any of your miniatures fall off the table, you see it more as a conversion possibility rather than a disaster.
For all this and more.
Play orks.
I'm Mark-Half-Ork-at-Large, and I approve this message.

orks buddy, orks are what you should do.
for all of marks reasons and more, there is no other army out there that can be converted as much as the orks. I know, I've tried choas, nid's,space marines.
there is no other place that you can let your mind unleash its catastophic ideas on than making a battlewagon out of a soapdish nad have it look right. Orks don't need ryme or reason, they just fight for the sake of it.
This will be your decision,I know it.
Imagine, no one color scheme, no one army list,no one set of principles to follow. If you just want to put a whole bunch of guys on the board and run, go for it. if you want to field a whole bunch of nasty machinery, go for it. If you want huge amounts of firepower, go for it. Hell they even have psyker stuff now.
oh yeah and don't forget you could have what you never had before, an army that can have firepower and close combat superiority at the same time.
Come on pete, I know you want to.......

Oi!
That brought me around. I'm starting an Ork army now and I'll order two Black Reach Box sets to start.

I think there's even more to a converted squats army.
with the new codex, you could run vulkan and a captian on a bike, this would give you access to a command squad with bikes and thunderhammers
your elites could be techmarines (squat engineers) their new "enhance fortification rule" is certainly squat fluffy or terminators. even a sterguard squad with combi weapons wouldn't be un-fluffy
Use ratling snipers for your troops. have six units of ten with nine snipers and a heavy weapon. break them into combat squads. squat units were based around five member squads in the RT days. Don't want all snipers? equipe them with bolt pistol and ccw and call them squat berzerkers. (I have a bunch of axes I'll send you)
Fast attack: assault squad, drop the jump pack for a "tunneling" drop pod. maybe even vanguards with thunderhammers, the gyro copter has been mentioned, but don't overlook more bikes or attack bikes-the squats had attack bikes in the form of heavy weapon trikes
Devastators aren't out of line for squats, but the thunderfir cannon with more techmarines or vindicators converted out of basilisks as "grand cannons" would be a cheap way to get three heavies in.
I love the idea.
hell, You could even do a "drop pod" army with tunnellers.
